Two Elements, One Small Surface

Combining a portrait with lettering on a piece this size is the hardest thing to pull off in rakhi work. The two compete for space, and if the finish is wrong they compete for attention as well — a bright plating would bounce light across both until neither is legible. The oxidised finish is what makes the combination work: dark settles into the engraved seal and into the recesses of the face, while the raised planes of each stay bright, so the eye can separate the portrait from the script instead of seeing one busy surface. It is the same reason the finish has always been used on temple work with inscriptions.

Care guide

Keep away from water, perfume, deodorant and oil — spray fragrance first, wear the rakhi after. Wipe gently with a soft dry cotton cloth after wearing. Do not clean with silver polish liquid, toothpaste, or a metal brush — this strips the oxidised layer and flattens both the portrait and the seal lettering. Store in a dry zip pouch or airtight box, away from humidity. Remove before bathing, swimming, or sleeping to protect the thread. If it dulls over time, a light dry buff with cotton restores the shine.
