Why the Shivling Suits an Oxidised Finish

The Shivling is a smooth, rounded form — there is no face or ornament to carry it, only shape. That makes shading everything: without it, a lingam on a small rakhi is just a bright oval with no sense of volume. The oxidised finish gives it that volume, the dark gathering at the base and around the yoni-pindika while the crown of the lingam stays light, so it reads as a rounded form rising from its base rather than a flat shape. It is the same reason a stone lingam in a temple is dark and worn rather than polished bright — the age and the shadow are the point.
